Aluko won’t be fined by Aberdeen FC

Boss McGhee happy to move on

ABERDEEN FC winger Sone Aluko has escaped punishment for going AWOL last week.

Aluko went to Spain to meet up with the Nigerian Under-20 World Cup squad without manager Mark McGhee’s permission.

The 20-year-old finally returned in time to feature in their SPL win over St Mirren at Pittodrie.

Aluko has since flown back out to Egypt to link up with the Nigerians to prepare for the Under-20 World Cup finals.

McGhee today confirmed that he has gone with his blessing this time – and that the winger won’t be fined for his part in what went on.

McGhee said: “There will be no punishment because when we sat down and went through what happened, minute by minute, the facts showed that Sone meant no disrespect to me or Aberdeen.

“At no point had he intended to come back a day late from the first trip to Spain, that was created by problems at the Nigerian FA’s end.

“Sone and I also picked over what happened after the Falkirk game.

“I now accept that I should have spoken to Sone immediately after that game and told him I wasn't going to let him travel on the Tuesday.

“Sone also accepts he should have sought me out to hear my thoughts before he left.

“There were grey areas that created problems and I’m happy that he finally came back as requested to clear everything up.

“But there is now no doubts in any of our minds that Sone is committed to the cause here.

“Those will be my final words on that, we should all move on.”

i am happy it has turned out this way for the lad, as Mghee had obviously told him before he could go, the fitness thing is drivel, as no manager plays a player to see if he is struggling with an injury, thats the bit that i dont get.

Glad to hear common sense and judgement have prevailed. Sone needs to learn how to follow protocol, however if we have asperations of him remaining we must support his international ambitions. As we all know, players learn and develope from international experience, therefore it will pay back AFC. Just wish others in the squad were able to raise their game for themselves, their collagues, the club and the fans. We need to better manage these situations because there is an impact on players performance and mental ability. Lets manage things professionally
