TORRENTS of water swamped roads in the Aberdeen area today causing chaos for thousands of drivers.

And hundreds of people were evacuated from their

homes after the worst night of rainfall in nearly 40 years.

The tail-end of Tropical Storm Danny swept the Aberdeen area dumping more than a month’s worth of rain in less than 24 hours.

Police today warned motorists to stay off the roads as the flooding and weather conditions triggered a spate of accidents across Aberdeen and left drivers abandoning their cars at roadsides.

Farburn Terrace, in Aberdeen’s Dyce, saw cars roof-deep in water as floods hit.

And council bosses closed Aberdeen’s Denburn car park today, until at least Monday, after the ground floor – which was thought to contain a number of cars – was flooded.

Staff at Aberdeen letting firm Belvoir, which overlooks the Aberdeen car park, arrived at work to chaos today, with cars submerged under Rosemount Viaduct.

Grampian Police roads policing Chief Insp Ian Wallace today urged drivers to stay at home.

Roads closed due to flooding included the A90 Peterhead to Fraserburgh, A96 Keith to Fochabers, A920 Ellon to Pitmedden, A975 Aberdeen to Newburgh and A947 Aberdeen to Oldmeldrum at Stoneywood, B9022 Rothiemay to Huntly road along with an unclassified road between Feughside and Glen Dye on Deeside.

Met Office forecaster Ian Robinson said: “In July 1970 we had 3.3in (83.9mm) of rain in one day. Since records started in 1940 this has been the second-wettest 24 hour period.”
