A MAN died today after plunging from scaffolding in Aberdeen.
The 63-year-old was trapped under the scaffolding and rubble after the plunge at the former Grampian Hotel, in Aberdeen city centre.
A major operation was launched to free the man, who had been working at the Aberdeen site, but he died in hospital.
Two fire engines and three ambulances were scrambled to the former hotel in Aberdeen shortly after 8.15am today.
A police car and two unmarked police vehicles were also at the site of the former hotel, which is on Aberdeen’s Stirling Street and backs on to Carmelite Street.
Firefighters climbed up three levels of scaffolding, around 20ft, on the outside of the former Aberdeen hotel before heading in through a window.
A handful of firefighters came out of the four-storey Aberdeen building minutes later and collected a stretcher and neck brace from the back of an ambulance.
Grampian Police today confirmed a worker, who was from the Aberdeen area, died as a result of an industrial accident.
A spokesman said: “The man was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.”
Police today launched a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive into the circumstances of the death. A police spokesman said a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.
The former hotel in Aberdeen is currently being developed into flats, although the owner of the site was not known.
