ABERDEEN FC’s task against Celtic on Saturday is simple – win their first SPL opening game since 2002.

Aberdeen FC possess a terrible record when it comes to kicking off top flight campaigns.

Not since the last-gasp 2-1 defeat of Hibs at Easter Road seven years ago have Aberdeen FC started a season in style.

Chris Clark grabbed the winner in that game, on August 8, 2002, an astonishing seven minutes into injury time – which was added on for a head knock to Kevin McNaughton. Darren Mackie also netted in the second half, after Paco Luna’s opener, to give Aberdeen FC the points.

Now playing for English Championship side Plymouth Argyle, Clark can’t believe he is the last Dons player to have scored an opening day winner.

When told Aberdeen had not began a Premier League term with a victory since then, Clark replied with shock in his voice: “Have they not?

“I still remember the goal. It was in the 97th minute and it was my first for Aberdeen.

“I was absolutely delighted to have scored the winner in the game, with it coming so late on as well.

“It was a long time ago but I enjoyed it.”

That was some bounce that goal, the 97th min or something like that and if I remember correctly, the ref played another 2mins or so after it! Shame no one had the tv rights at that time (think the BBC did by the next week) so the goal was probably never filmed, or if it was it hasnt been on tv.....that I saw anyway.
