ABERDEEN sales of ice-cream, barbecues, fans and summer clothes have shot up.

With temperatures topping 26C in Aberdeen – and even higher in other parts of the North-east – folk have been desperate to enjoy the summer weather any way they can.

Ice-cream maker Mackies today revealed sales had gone through the roof.

In a normal week, it would sell 180,000 litres – but the warm weather has bumped up the figure to 250,000 litres.

Denis Emslie, sales director at Mackies, said: “Warm, dry weather is ice-cream weather – we sold a total of 1.3 million litres last month.

“We’ve seen a tremendous increase this week because of the weather and the individual pots have sold even better.”

Sales of summer clothes have also been boosted.

Aberdeen’s Debenhams store has seen rises of 96% of men’s shorts and 90% of men’s t-shirts in a week compared to last year.

Women’s swimwear saw an increase of 163% and women’s kaftans were up by 350%.

DIY chain B&Q has also had scores of customers through its shops in Aberdeen.

Bridge of Don store manager Duncan Knox said: “We’ve had an increase for particular types of products over the last few days.

“The fantastic weather has encouraged people to buy cooling and air conditioning fans, garden furniture and barbecues and accessories.”

A spokeswoman for the company said cooling fan sales are up 2,000% week on week from Sunday to Tuesday compared to last year.

A Met Office spokeswoman said the outlook for the weekend and start of next week was expected to be a mixture of sun and showers.

Tomorrow temperatures were expected to reach 19C (66.2F), on Sunday the heat could reach 20C (68F) and on Monday it was anticipated the mercury would rise to 19C (66.2F).
