Fletcher has major plans for Burnley

Four-year deal for former Hibee

RECORD Burnley signing Steven Fletcher is determined to make a name for himself in the English Premier League.

Fletcher secured a four-year deal at Turf Moor following his £3 million move from Hibs.

The 22-year-old striker was looking for a new challenge after coming through the ranks at the Edinburgh club, where he scored 52 goals in 137 starts.

He had four years of his contract to run, and new Hibs boss John Hughes had hoped he would stay.

But Fletcher said: “I have wanted to come to England for a while now to show people what I can do and I am so looking forward to it.

“I want to give 100% and score goals – and I hope I can do that.”

Fletcher, believes he will grow as a player under manager Owen Coyle, the former St Johnstone boss.

“I am absolutely delighted to sign for the club,” he said.

“It is a great feeling to be here, and I am just looking forward to getting the season started now.

“As soon as I heard that Burnley were after me, and knowing Owen Coyle as I do from my time in Scotland, I thought this was the right place to come and develop my career.

“The opportunity came along in January for me to join Celtic, but Hibs did not think it was the right time to move on.

“When the chance arrived to come to the Premier League and play for a club like Burnley, I was glad they accepted that.”

Fletcher was Coyle’s second signing of the day, defender Tyrone Mears having arrived from Derby for a fee around £500,000.

Mears, who had a spell on loan at Marseille last season, is looking for a change of luck in the top flight.

He had a shattering experience in the 2007-08 season, as part of the Derby County side that finished bottom of the table with an all-time low tally of 11 points.

Mears said: “It was a freak season, something I do not think will happen again.

“I have blanked it out of my mind.”
