FOR some reason the Begbie household always seems to be in a rush.
We’re perpetually going at full tilt to get out the door to go somewhere.
Sometimes little things get missed in the rush – like factoring in dinner.
We have, however, found a solution if we need to get to the cinema, yet still grab a tasty – and cheap – bite.
Curtain up on the Ghillies Lair. This Harvester eatery has become a regular stopping place for us, thanks to its early bird menu.
Take our most recent trip. The grown-ups and oldest urchin shared a fine Harvest Feastival (£4.98) – a stack of starters from spicy wings to breaded prawns, onion rings and deep fried mushrooms that had us fighting over the scraps.
Still, we had room for our mains – in the boy’s case a combo of spit-roast chicken and ribs (£5.99) Both were perfectly cooked, with melt-in-the mouth meat falling off the bone. Yum.
Mrs B had gone retro with a gammon steak and pineapple (£4.99) and was rewarded with a tender, if a bit salty, doorstop of a cut, topped with fresh pineapple. Nice touch.
Liking a kick to my food I opted for the spitroast piri piri chicken (£4.99). Billed as a half a chicken, what arrived was actually two legs. Disappointing, but still filling. Again, cooked perfectly with the spicy sauce giving it all a lift.
Oh, did I mention the free salad bar. Bonus.
All the while our littlest one was singing the praises of her flame-grilled chicken (£3.95).
With drinks, our bill for heartily feeding all four of us came to a painless £31.40.
