Hornblowers: West Quay, Gourdon

YOU’VE got to like tucking into fish and chips while sitting looking at the boats that caught your haddock.

And that’s just one of many things to like about Hornblowers, the sit-in side of the excellent chipper at the heart of Gourdon’s working – but still attractive – harbour.

Apart from the views, there’s the friendly and swift service in this airy and elegant loft space.

Then there’s the food itself. It’s not fancy – the usual chipper fayre with wraps, paninis and baked potatoes on offer, too – but it’s wholesome and fine.

My aforementioned haddock supper (£7.95) came in a light, if slightly greasy, batter that encased some of the tastiest and freshest fish you’ll find on the east coast. A melt-in-the-mouth delight.

All that plus chunky and grease-free chips that were so more-ish and a big dollop of stick-to-your-ribs mushy peas.

Our wee one agreed as she tucked into the kids version (£4.20) – with breaded haddock instead of battered. For her to say it was the yummiest fish ever is high praise indeed.

Meanwhile, Mrs B was “yumming” too.

Her chicken fillets (£6.80) were the finest cuts of breast and went superbly well with the garlic dip she had ordered on the side.

We had popped in for a quick bite and ended up as real fans.
