The Prince of Wales: St Nicholas Lane, Aberdeen

WHAT better antidote for the hustle and bustle of Aberdeen on a Saturday afternoon than stepping back in time?

And entering The Prince Of Wales pub is as close to time travel as you’ll get.

With its colourful characters and wide range of ales, The Prince Of Wales brims with humble charm.

And that modesty filters into the food menu, the canteen serving method and the prices.

Never has the phrase “What you see is what you get” been more apt.

I opted for pub favourite, macaroni cheese (£4.95) with salad and chips.

The dish was delicious with a moreish creamy sauce and a thick layer of cheddar on top.

Complemented by the chunky chips and the basic salad, the large plateful proved a mountain to finish.

My friend opted for the lentil soup (£2.25) which was served with half a baguette.

Healthy and hearty, the small bowl tasted like home cooking at its finest.

Even though it was only lunchtime the chocolate fudge cake (£2.95) proved too tempting for my sweet tooth.

Soaked in cream, the slab proved a little heavy due to the sheer size of it and the sickly sweetness of the icing.

Overall, The Prince Of Wales’ simple but effective ethos works wonders as the each of the dishes was great value for money and provided a hearty, if not healthy, feed.
