Triple Kirks: Schoolhill, Aberdeen

IT’S that time of year I always secretly dread – my girlfriend’s birthday.

For someone as romantic as Anne Widdecombe’s gym sock, finding that knockout present is always a bit of a tricky task.

Friends and family haven’t been much help, with suggestions ranging from “an otter” to “nothing” (it’s a wonder my brother isn’t single).

And when I met the missus in Triple Kirks after a rather unsuccessful shopping trip, the distinct absence of armfuls of bags gave the game away.

Ah well, in times of trial there’s only one thing for it – a spot of grub.

I went for the chorizo and halloumi burger (£5.50) with an extra 50p for the curly fries.

The massive bap was chock full of meat, with the huge burger nicely complemented by the spicy Spanish sausage.

The halloumi cheese wasn’t something I was used to, but it added a distinctive zing.

My girlfriend’s chicken and cranberry burger (£5.50) came loaded with brie, and we paid 50p extra to upgrade to shoestring fries.

She loves the old chicken/cranberry combo, and wasn’t disappointed by the succulent breast and zingy sauce.

We couldn’t leave without trying the white chocolate fondue (£5.95), which came with chunks of waffle, strawberries and banana.

It was a messy business, but a great way to end the meal.

Maybe she’d like a fondue set for her birthday ...
