I’ll shoot Reds to Scottish Cup glory

DARREN Mackie aims to hit the goal trail at Alloa tomorrow to kick-start Aberdeen’s Scottish Cup bid.
The striker’s first ever senior goal for the Dons came at Alloa in a 3-0 Scottish Cup win in 2001.
And he is hoping Recreation Park will continue to be a happy hunting ground – by firing the Dons into the fifth round.
He said: “Alloa holds happy memories for me as it was where I scored my first senior goal.
“Hopefully, I can go back there and get a couple of goals to make it even more memorable.
“Playing Alloa away is a tricky tie, but we have the quality in the squad to get the win.
“Tomorrow will be like a cup final for Alloa and they will be out to show what they can do against an SPL side.
“We have to be professional and go into the tie with the right attitude.
“If we do, we will come out on top. Making the next round is all that matters.”
The 26-year-old will go head-to-head with Alloa’s powerful defenders like 6ft 4in centre back Scott Buist.
But he insists there is no way he will be muscled off the ball.
“Being up against big centre backs does not bother me at all,” said Mackie.
“I have played against some huge defenders before, and done well.
“I will just concentrate on my own game and try to score the goals to take us through to the next round.”
The Dons’ cup aspirations ended in disaster last season, when they lost 4-3 to First Division Queen of the South in the semi-finals.
But Mackie insists there will be no hangover from that setback.
“Losing the semi-final was disappointing, but we are all over that now,” he said.
“It is in the past and there is no point looking back, it’s all about looking forward.
“We need to go to Alloa with a positive attitude and get the job done.
“Ideally, we can get to the final and win it this season, and we will be doing all we can to achieve that.
“Aberdeen proved last season that we have the quality by beating Celtic in the quarter-finals.”
Mackie is one of six players who is out of contract at the end of the season.
He said: “I am still waiting to hear about a new deal. I just want to get the Alloa game out of the way, that is more important than contract talks.”

Now correct me if I'm wrong but didn't JC say he was definitely offering Mackie a new contract and that he would do that in the first week of the new year? Is there something on the cards? Does JC have his sights on a striker that he will have to offload a player or two to match the wage demands? I hope so. Not that I don't like Mackie, but does he score enough - running around and effort are not really enough if we have ambitions to move forward. Time will tell...

If only Darren Mackie scored as many goals as often as he appeared in the papers talking about what he is going to do.... Like miss an open goal against Hamilton last week?! Lovell 8 v Mackie 5. Thats the goals each has scored this season, and Lovell is playing in a team that's struggling against relegation! Release this numpty and sign a striker that can play alongside Lee Miller!

Colin - Exactly mate, these guys are getting too big for their boots. They have obviously forgot about last years semi already.

I have to be honest, Mackie has impressed me a little this season in terms of his first touch and control, I see a vast improvement on previous seasons but like everyone here is saying, for a striker he just doesnt score enough goals, thats the bottom line. Coming out every week in the papers saying he will do this and do that doesnt help matters. I still think we will get past Alloa but wont be a breeze by any means

If we are being honest do any of the strikers at Todders actually score enough goals? I think Miller is one of the pieces of the jigsaw but we really need someone who can benefit from his play and put the ball in the back of the net - Lovell might have fitted the bill if he was fit all the time, like he is at Falkirk!

Derek - Surely Darren Mackie IS the other pieces of the jigsaw you refer to, because like a jigsaw he goes to pieces in the box! ....I'll get my coat....

Mackie might actually score against lower league opposition, like JC says he isn't a gifted goalscorer otherwise he wouldn't be playing for AFC. It still hacks me off that a club the size of Aberdeen hasn't been able to get a goalscorer since......Aruld Stavrum?????

Us Aberdeen fans are a right positive bunch eh? Do you want the players to say that they'll get beaten? Would that make you happier? Lets get behind the team! Come on Darren, lets get into them!

Derek, if only your prediction of a new striker is true. Mackie is good for the last 20min when the defenders are knackered, and 2 of them have been sent off, the keeper is up the other end of the pitch and he has a minute or two to control the ball. 10 out of 10 for effort, but in the 'top' league in Scotland you need more than just effort. Wouldnt slag Miller for his lack of goals as he is more of a modern day forward rather than a striker, I still think Tommy will may do a jobif he is given time and games, now there is a statement!!!!!

I like moaning as much as the next 'sweety wrapper'! we all just want good players and a good team. I think we're not all that bad off really not far from being a pretty good side again.

All these people who seem to think Lovell was the answer... Did you ever see him play? He was lazier than ten Jim Hamiltons.

As long as Mackie is playing for the Dons we should back him all the way. Have bet on him to score first. COME ON YOU REDS!
