Wogan: ‘I can’t go back to Aberdeen’
Sir Terry Wogan scared away by rowies
Published:
A NORTH-EAST delicacy has scared away one of the country’s top TV personalities from Aberdeen.
Broadcasting legend Sir Terry Wogan has said he can never return to the Granite City.
Wogan, who has been knighted, said the dough, butter and lard creations tasted like “sea water” and “seaweed”.
His comments may have been made three years ago but he has not forgotten the taste of butteries.
After receiving an e-mail on his radio show about how the listener enjoyed their first Hogmanay in Scotland Sir Terry asked: “Have you tried a rowie yet? I can never go back to Aberdeen.”
The star visited Aberdeen in October 2005 as part of his early-morning show.
On his show, he described rowies as “an acquired taste”.
He later said: “I find them a bit salty. It’s like eating dried sea water.”
Days later buttery fans flooded the star with e-mails.
Today baker Graeme Thain said despite the broadcaster’s best attempts, the rowie continues to sell.
He added: “We have all got radios and because of that he is in Aberdeen everyday. We can’t escape him – whether we like it or not.”

On a return visit to Aberdeen, the first thing I wanted to eat was a rowie. It was like visiting an old friend, although in reality they are not good for you in the cholestorol department....but I splurged for the occasion!

Have to agree with you linda. I live in Germany, and i really miss the good old rowies. I´ve tried making them myself, but they don´ taste quite so good. True they are a bit fatty , but who cares !!!

Alan, As much as I miss rowies, I miss fish n' chips even more! wrapped in newspaper, and piping hot. I can smell 'em as I type! Don't know where in Germany you are, but I worked eight months in Pirmasens, near Kaiserslautern.
